My name is Michelle.
I am a Doctor of Traditional Chinese medicine and the owner of Comox Valley Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic in downtown Courtenay, BC, Canada.
I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to help people improve their lives through improving their health. I have a special love of working with women and helping them navigate the hormonal changes and life stressors, from the teenage years to menopause and beyond.
My first personal experience with traditional Chinese Medicine was while I was going to school. I was struggling with some hormonal issues. After coming off the birth control pill, my period did not return for over one year. While conventional medicine was not concerned with this, it did not feel right to me, especially as I was in the middle of learning this whole new way of looking at the body and approaching my health. I booked a treatment at the student clinic and after three acupuncture treatments and a month of herbal medicine, my periods returned, and my cycle was restored.
I was hooked for good.
In the last twenty years of treating patients and incorporating traditional Chinese medicine principles into my own life, I have grown to love Chinese medicine even more. I want to let everyone know that there can be another way. You do not have to suffer through heavy painful menstrual cycles, daily headaches, painful joints, digestive disorders, loose stools, constipation, poor sleep, or anxiety.
These are not a normal part of life or something you have to live with.
There is something that can be done.
It can be a little bit of work and you may have to change some of your habits (they are probably what got you into this mess in the first place)… but… You can feel better!
And you deserve to feel your best.
I believe in a complimentary approach to health care, combining the many benefits of western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine. I love to help people on their health journey, guiding them to be the best that they can be and supporting them along the way.
If you are interested in learning more about how Chinese medicine can help you, I would love it if you signed up for our monthly newsletter. It’s filled with recipes, health tips, and easy ways to incorporate the theories of Chinese medicine into your daily life. You can also schedule an appointment and meet with me to see how traditional Chinese medicine can help you reach your health goals.
I look forward to meeting you.
Michelle Hughes is a Registered Acupuncturist and Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of British Columbia. She is also honoured to be a Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Medicine and a member of the Obstetrical Acupuncture Association. After graduation, Michelle interned at the Anhui Acupuncture hospital in Hefei, China, where she treated hundreds of patients and gained invaluable experience in acupuncture and herbal medicine. Since then, she has also trained with Dr. Randine Lewis, author “The Infertility Cure,” in Texas, and in New York with Mike Berkley, founder of the Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness and Women’s Health. Michelle grew up in the Comox Valley, where she now feels lucky to be able to raise her own children. Most days you can find her outside, enjoying the forests and trails by running or mountain biking. She is passionate about family, travel, Chinese medicine, and lifelong learning.
Jennifer has been practicing acupuncture since 2010 after graduating from the Pacific Rim College 3 year Acupuncture Diploma program. She is registered and is in good standing with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in British Columbia.
Since graduating she has taken many trainings including those focused on women’s health, fertility and pregnancy, sports injuries and pain. Jennifer often uses cups, moxabustion, auricular acupuncture and dietary therapy to complement treatments.
Her passion for acupuncture began on Quadra Island, where she grew up. The acupuncture treatments she received helped speed recovery from a severe knee injury and her deep interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine began. TCM has also helped her with other health concerns that were life changing ! After graduating college, Jen moved to Squamish where she worked at Squamish’s primary integrated health care clinic for 9 years. There she gained experience treating a wide variety of injuries and ailments. Part of her love for this medicine is the broad range of conditions that it treats. Acupuncture is effective for stress management, anxiety, pain, insomnia and much more. Acupuncture has an incredible ability to help the body return to a place of balance.
An island girl at heart, Jen is happy to call Cumberland her new home town. When she isn’t practicing acupuncture you can find her playing outside – biking, snowboarding, surfing, running with her puppy and traveling with her partner.
My first session is still vivid: she sat with me and took her time to do an exceptionally thorough intake, asking questions about every aspect of my health. I remember leaving feeling wonderfully cared for.
