Dr. Michelle Hughes
Hello, I am Michelle a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the owner of Comox Valley Acupuncture clinic. I am enthusiastic about my job and am extremely excited to help people improve their life through improving their health. I have a love of working with women, helping them navigate the hormonal changes and life stresses from the teenage years to menopause and beyond.
I grew up in The Comox Valley and am so happy to be back and raising my own children here. Most days you can find me outside enjoying the trails and forests either running or mountain biking. I am passionate about my family, travel, my job and lifelong learning!
I attended the University of British Columbia where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology. I then chose to study Chinese medicine and graduated in 2000 from the acclaimed International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Vancouver, British Columbia as a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After graduation I interned at the Anhui Acupuncture hospital in Hefei, China where I gained valuable experience in acupuncture and herbal medicine from the hundreds of patients that I treated. I am a Registered Acupuncturist and Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of British Columbia. I am also honored to be a Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Medicine as well as a member of the Obstetrical Acupuncture Association.
One of the amazing perks of my job is the ablity to travel and learn from other great Chinese medicine practitioners. I have trained with some of North America’s foremost health experts in obstetrics, gynecology, reproductive medicine, sports medicine and motor point therapy. I have traveled to Houston, Texas to train with Dr. Randine Lewis author of “The Infertility Cure”, and New York City to train with Mike Berkley, founder of the Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness and Women’s Health. I have also taken birth coaching and doula training. I have been trained in motor point acupuncture in San Diego with Matt Callison, author of the” Sport’s Medicine Acupuncture Handbook” and in Calgary with Whitfield Reeves, author of “Acupuncture Handbook for Sport’s Injuries & Pain”.
I believe in a complimentary approach to health care, combining the many benefits of western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine. I love to help people on their health journey, guiding them to be the best that they can be and supporting them along the way.
My first session is still vivid: she sat with me and took her time to do an exceptionally thorough intake, asking questions about every aspect of my health. I remember leaving feeling wonderfully cared for.
